List who holds what, with percentages, and the calculator works out each person's effective ownership of the company through every layer, flags the owners at or above your threshold and draws the structure chart. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere, and results appear as you type.
A calculator, not a determination. It does arithmetic on the holdings you enter. It cannot tell you who a beneficial owner is under any law. See the limitations below and check the rules that apply to you.
1. The company you are researching
Common thresholds are 10, 25 and 50. Some regimes say "at or above", others "more than". Check what applies to your situation.
2. Who holds what
One line per holding: who owns what percentage of which company. A company that appears as a holder can then be given its own holders by choosing it in the "of" column. Tick "Listed" for any holder that appears on a sanctions or watch list.

Drag any box sideways to rearrange. Drag a line, or its percentage label, to bend it sideways, and drag the dot at either end to slide where it meets a box. Use these to untangle overlapping lines. Your arrangement is kept in the downloads.
Downloads use a light background so they paste cleanly into reports and slides.
How effective ownership is calculated
Effective ownership is the share of the company a person ultimately holds directly and indirectly. Multiply the percentages along each chain of holdings, then add the chains together if a person reaches the company by more than one route.
Person A holds 25% of Alpha directly = 25%
Person A holds 50% of Beta, and Beta holds 60% of Alpha = 50% x 60% = 30%
Person A in total = 25% + 30% = 55%
The tool uses that method for every chain you enter, however many layers there are.
Reading the results
Direct and indirect. Direct is held in the person's own name (legal owner). Indirect is held through one or more companies.
Owners not recorded. A company in the chain with no holders entered is shown as its own line, with the share of the company that sits behind it. That is the part of the structure still to be traced.
Not recorded. If the holdings you entered for a company add up to less than 100%, the remainder is shown as not recorded. If they add up to more than 100%, the tool warns you.
Listed holders. The tool adds up the share held by anyone you flag, stopping at the first flagged holder on each chain, so nothing is counted twice.
Limitations of this tool
Control beyond share ownership. Control can exist without shares, for example through rights to appoint directors, nominees, trusts or other agreements. The calculator works from percentages only and cannot assess these.
Simplified structures. Each holding is a single percentage. Shares with different voting or economic rights, options, convertibles and trust or partnership interests are not distinguished. Circular ownership is detected and counted, but check that the holdings are right.
Differences between regimes. Thresholds (commonly 10%, 25% or 50%), wording (“at or above” or “more than”) and the treatment of indirect ownership all vary. Some sanctions regimes also have their own rules for ownership through companies that are themselves owned or controlled by listed parties. This tool multiplies percentages along each chain, so it may not match the method your regime uses.
Accuracy of inputs. The calculator relies entirely on what you enter. ShastRisk has not verified it, and it may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. The tool does not check names against any sanctions list. “Listed” is a flag you set.
Not a determination or advice. The chart is a mathematical representation of the information you entered. It does not establish the ultimate beneficial owner under any legal or regulatory framework, and it is not legal, regulatory or compliance advice. Results, including those for holders you mark as Listed, are illustrative and should not be relied on to decide sanctions compliance or legal obligations. Verify independently and take professional advice before acting.
If you have an identification number from a listing, the ID Decoder reads what it says about the holder.
Need the ownership researched, not just calculated?
Registry records show shareholders. Tracing them back to the people behind a company takes more. ShastRisk's Counterparty Check and Enhanced Due Diligence cover ownership and control, with findings you can document.
